Overview

KE4XG offers an upgrade over the cable type control systems which can be cumbersome to install & operate. Up to 4 stations can be installed; operation is safe & smooth. KE4XG replaces any previous model of the KE4, KE4a and KE4+ systems.

The KE-4XG is an electronic engine control / remote control system (often called “fly-by-wire” for mechanical shift & throttle engines) designed to replace or upgrade from conventional cable-type controls.

It allows control of shift (forward / neutral / reverse) and throttle from one or more helm stations, plus optional remote/handheld control. It communicates via CAN bus between head(s) and control unit, with an actuator converting electronic signals into mechanical cable motion.

This replaces the KE4, KA4a and KE4+.

  • Supply Voltage: DC 9V to 32V (works with 12V or 24V systems)
  • Actuator current draw: ~16A peak; ~5A typical under load; standby consumption ≤ 0.5A
  • Thrust / load capacity of actuator:Operating thrust ~147 N; max (constraint) load ~343 N
  • Stroke lengths: Shift: ≈24-38 mm (forward/reverse) adjustable; Throttle: up to ~78.5mm max.
  • Operating temperature range: -20 °C to +77 °C
  • Storage temperature: -40 °C to +85 °C

 

To install / operate a KE-4XG system, there are a number of parts involved:

  • Control Head(s): lever(s) where operator shifts / throttles. Various types, including single or twin levers, with options such as PTT (push to trim/tilt) switches, different lever materials etc.
  • Control Unit: the electronic “brain” housing DIP switches, etc.
  • Actuator(s): mechanical actuator(s) that pull/push the cable(s) for shift & throttle.
  • Bus Harness (CAN), Power Harness, T-Harnesses etc: for interconnecting the stations, actuators, and power. Cable lengths are configurable (typically from a few meters up to ~30-50m in some cases).
  • Optional accessories: buzzer, neutral lock / idle control switches, trim circuits (for outboard), handheld station etc.

Use & Operation Highlights

  • Neutral Throttle Mode: you can have the throttle engage without shifting into gear, useful for warming up, or trolling type operations.
  • Station Transfer: when multiple helm/control stations exist, can transfer control from one station to another. Needs to be done from neutral, with neutral LEDs etc.
  • Start-in-Gear Protection: prevents starting if control is not in neutral, to avoid accidental forward/reverse start.
  • LED & Alarm Indicators: visual indicators on control head (LEDs) show gear/throttle positions, active station, fault codes etc.; there’s a way to view fault logs via software.
